Centenarians have become one of the fastest-growing groups in the United States. According to the latest statistics of the U.S. Census Bureau, about 70000 Americans have crossed the insurmountable threshold of centenarians, which is expected to increase to 600000 by 2050.
What makes these people more active for decades than those born of the same age? An analysis of the 70, 000 centenarians showed that genes, lifestyle, personality traits, and the fact that they rarely get sick and take medicine determine their longevity, according to the US News website.
The researchers have revealed some innate rules that can make people live in three digits.
Women have obvious advantages. 85% of centenarians are women.
2. When a person is born will also determine the length of his life. Babies born in the autumn are slightly more likely to live to 100 than those born in the spring. The researchers speculate that environmental factors that people are exposed to in the early stages of life contribute to such differences. Pregnant women in winter intake of nutrients are not very comprehensive, exposure to less sunlight, the body's synthesis of vitamin D is also less, these factors have brought some long-term adverse effects on the health of infants born in spring.
3. Have a long-lived family. Thomas Powers, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University, has found that half of the centenarians are also very old.
In addition to congenital and genetic aspects, researchers remind centenarians not to give up the good lifestyle and habits they have developed, otherwise, they will lose all their efforts. Genes indeed play a role in the longevity of these old people, but it is also a mistake to think that they can live to 100 years old entirely by genes.
1. No smoking. Bradley Wilcox, a longevity scientist in Hawaii, is the director of medicine for the world's longest centenarian survey. His team found that non-smoking increased the likelihood of living to 100 by seven times.
2. Keep slim. Reducing obesity means reducing the risk of various chronic diseases.
3. Having a happy marriage life is conducive to maintaining a healthy mentality.
4. Optimistic and broad-minded. Most of them can defuse the pressure in their work and life, and find a quick solution to their problems. They can quickly get rid of their worries and won't haggle over trifles. They are more stable in mood, extroverted, diligent, and active in community activities.
For most ordinary people who don't have longevity genes in their bodies, lifestyle choices are crucial. The researchers believe that choosing the right lifestyle can explain 75% to 80% of the average person's longevity, while genes explain the rest.
The study of centenarians also brings good news, that is, old age does not necessarily mean the complete loss of self-care ability. 43% of centenarians live to be 80 years old without serious illness.
"It's not that the older you live, the sicker you are. We found in our survey that the older the elderly, the healthier they are."
